Match the request to the task
A video call can have an understandable reason to request a microphone. An article usually does not. Ask which feature needs the capability, whether you chose that feature and whether an alternative exists. An unexplained request is a reason to pause, not a reason to experiment.
Choose the narrowest useful access
Your browser may offer a one-time permission, permission for the current visit or a longer-lasting choice. Available options vary. Read the wording carefully, especially for location and clipboard access, because information from another task may be involved. Do not paste sensitive material merely to satisfy a prompt.
Revisit earlier decisions
Open the browser’s site settings to review existing allowances. A permission that made sense for a previous visit may no longer be useful. This information publication does not require your camera, microphone or location for reading, so those capabilities are not prerequisites for using its articles.
A quick checklist
- Connect each permission request to a feature you selected.
- Prefer limited access when your browser offers it.
- Remove old allowances through the browser’s site settings.
